One way to make straight strokes for the smaller branches and twigs is to turn the paper to a horizontal position instead of the usually vertical stroking to the section. Some people find it easier to make straight strokes in this direction. However, it is usually not considered good technique to move the paper to better accommodate the brush stroke. You should be so well-practiced that you can make any stroke necessary from the upright page in front of you without turning the paper.

The leaves grow along the side of a twig, and three leaves grow off the end of a twig. A small stem comes off the twig to the broad end of the leaf.

1. Load the detail brush with dark ink.

2. Near where a twig attaches to a leaf cluster, paint small, curving stems to show that leaves are connected to something, even if the twig is not visible.
